From: "Russ Thorson" Subject: 5th BCS bowl+playoffs Date: Sat, 21 Aug 2004 15:09:50 -0700 Perhaps the new 5th BCS bowl will ultimately rise to form the keystone of a magnificent Division I-A tournament. The following outline features 11 bowls and 16 teams in 4 rounds. BCS method can be used to seed each round. 1st Round: Saturday after college conference championships--The 8 highest ranked conference champions, seeded 1-8, earn home field advantage to host the 8 remaining highest ranked teams, seeded 9-16, in reverse order. In this format, the 6 BCS conference champions could receive automatic bids. The highest ranked major independent is considered the same as a conference champion, and thereby able to vie for home field advantage. The non-advancing teams from round one can be available for other non-playoff bowls. 2nd Round: New Year's--Advancing teams re-seeded 1-8. 1-4 host 5-8, in reverse order, in the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta, & Orange Bowls. Pairings can be rotated among these 4 bowls on a 4 year cycle. 3rd Round: Mid-January--Advancing teams re-seeded 1-4. 1 & 2 host 3 & 4, in reverse order, in 2 of the 6 next best bowls(possibly Holiday, Cotton, Peach, Gator, Outback, & Capital One). Each bowl hosts a 3rd round match every 3 years. 2 years in between, each bowl can host a pair of non-advancing teams from round one. 4th Round: Late January--5th BCS Bowl & National Championship. Finalists re-seeded #1 & #2. #1 hosts #2 at one of the 4 major BCS bowl venues. Time between rounds(around 10 days to 2 weeks)allows student-athletes to maintain academic requirements, if classes are in session, and better enables loyal fans to make travel plans.
